COURSE DESCRIPTION

Attendees will learn about:

  • The direct effects of substance misuse in pregnancy.
  • The implications for maternal mental health in the perinatal period.
  • The interaction of factors which may influence the development of mother-infant attachment.

The workshop presenters will facilitate further discussion and exploration of related areas of practice and service development – assessments for court, accessing services and implementing recommendations following Hidden Harm (2003).

 

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

This workshop day would be suitable for a range of professionals including social workers, substance misuse workers, community paediatricians, commissioners of children’s services, midwives and CAMH professionals.

 

COURSE PROGRAMME

    09:00 to 09:20      Arrival Registration

    09:20                   Welcome and Introductions

    09:30 to 12:30      THEORETICAL MODELS
    The morning session will focus on the thinking that lies behind the importance of infancy in developmental terms. We will cover
    •    Brain development and Attachment, highlighting the links between them
    •    The impact of drug use on parenting There will be a 15 minute refreshment break

    12:30 to 13:15      LUNCH


    13:15 to 16:15      THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOMʼ - Practical case management
    The afternoon session will focus on thinking through the practical issues around management of cases where parental substance misuse is a significant issue. You will have the opportunity in groups to explore case vignettes addressing practicalities, such as partnership working and therapeutic interventions.
    We will discuss with you some of the practical things that can be done to help families.
    There will be a 15 minute refreshment break

    16:15 to 16:30      Round up of the day, finishing at 16-30
